Tips To Stay Tidy

|

Keeping your home organized and tidy doesn’t come naturally to just anyone. Sometimes the thought of cleaning can just be so exhausting, especially when you feel like within the blink of an eye your home has become a bit messy again. If you’re struggling with keeping your home clean, consider trying out some of these tips below!

Make Sure Everything has a Home

According to The Muse, “you can reduce the messy explosion if you just make sure that every single item that you own has a place.” This includes mail, business cards, pens, electronics, chapstick, and literally anything else you can think of. If you struggle to find a home for an item, consider having a drawer in your home that is more on the random side. For instance, this drawer could be a great place to put coupons, paperclips, magnets, and post-its! To make the “random” drawer even better, we would suggest getting clear individual bins for each item, and maybe even putting a post-it note in there that labels what you can find within the drawer.

Get Rid of Junk

If you were to walk into your bedroom right now, what are the odds that you would find some clothes on the floor, on your bed, or even on a random chair? That’s what we thought, probably likely. Something that can help tame your bedroom mess would be thoroughly going through your own clothes. Try on every single piece of clothing that you own. If one doesn’t spark joy, or if you have several that just don’t fit right anymore, find a new home for them. Consider donating them to a nearby shelter or placing those items in a labeled bin and putting it in storage. Once you’re done doing this, you’ll find that your room doesn’t get as messy as fast.

Accept That You’re Not Perfect

According to The Muse, “messy people beat themselves up all the time. They don’t have fun being messy - they know that society thinks they are slobs, and they get really stressed out before they have people over to their homes or desks.” This constant feeling becomes exhausting, but it might be a good time to have an honest conversation with yourself. No one is perfect, not one single person. When it comes to trying to become a tidier person, remember that baby steps are okay. Something as simple as putting your trash immediately in the bin rather than sitting on your desk could make the biggest difference because you may have just eliminated a pile of waste. Also, adapting these habits over time will allow your cleanliness to grow.

If you are a visual person and want to challenge yourself with being tidier this year, try this out. Have you ever seen people take photos of their fitness progression through photos of their bodies? Try that, but with photos of your own space. Take a photo of your home or desk once every other week and add it to a unique photo album. If you stay consistent with this, you may just find that your photo album is becoming neater and more visually pleasing to your liking. Not only that but with the permanent idea in the back of your mind that “I have to take a photo this Friday” could lead you to unconsciously pick up after yourself better.
