There is no doubt that technology is now a permanent part of our life. We can turn to our phone and with a few clicks we can order food, purchase items online, contact friends, or get an answer to a question that just popped in our head. This is true about our computers as well. Now that most of us are working remotely, there is a large possibility that we spend the majority of our day connected to a device. Research shows that on average people dedicate 10 hours a day to screen time. Because of this it is important to disconnect every now and then, recenter yourself, and appreciate the outside world. Although Chicago is known for many things, nature isn’t one of them. However, there are a few places scattered within the vicinity of Chicago where you can go and enjoy little pockets of nature. Here are some of our favorite nature getaways near Aqua at Lakeshore East.
Nature Walks Near Downtown Chicago
For those of you who aren’t looking to stray too far from home, Downtown Chicago has a few yet beautiful options. Just a short 14-minute walk from your apartment you’ll find the Lakefront Trail near North Grant Park. This trail runs parallel to Lake Michigan for about 18 miles and is sure to give you some stunning lake views. Leave your device at home or turn it off and make your way up to Ohio Street Beach where you can relax and listen to the waves while reading your favorite novel. Along the trail you’ll also find small patches of grass where you can sit down and relax.
Outdoor Adventures
In case you’re looking to disconnect from the loud city life and technology completely, make sure to check out Morton Arboretum and North Park Village Nature Center. Although these preserves are a little further out -- just over a 30 minute drive away from home -- they are well worth it. Here you’ll be able to fully escape and appreciate nature. At Morton Arboretum, you’ll be able to enjoy lush green landscapes and easy hikes through woodland foliage. Scattered throughout the garden are large wooden sculptures that reflect the natural beauty of Morton Arboretum. Similarly, at North Park Village Center you’ll be surrounded by 46-acres of woodlands, wetlands, and prairies. These are the perfect places to escape the city life, disconnect, and get a feel of nature.
Hidden Gems in City Parks
Grab some lunch, a book, your bike, and go out to explore hidden gems inside the nearby parks of Downtown Chicago. One example that comes to mind is Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool at Lincoln Park. Here you’ll be able to find peace through serene sounds of water and local fauna. This hidden gem is perfect to open a book and turn off your phone. Go out and discover other similar pockets of nature around Chicago.
It is important for us to disconnect from our devices a few times a month to destress and maintain proper mental health. One way to accomplish this is through outdoor activities. The perfect time to get out and explore is now as the days are getting warmer and flowers are blooming. Turn off your phone, explore nature, and reset!
