Chicago City Kayaking on the Chicago River

The Chicago River flows through the heart of the city, offering visitors and locals a chance to catch a view of the rustic riverbanks (home to native wildlife) and tourist hotspots from the comfort of their own boat. Kayaking in Chicago Along Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan only offers good paddle weather from late spring to early fall, but hitting her waters at the right time means getting a little break from the boat traffic of the Chicago River. But don’t let her calm waters fool you. High winds can create real waves deep into Lake Michigan, making it really only accessible to experienced paddlers.

If you’re not quite at that level yet, Urban Kayak’s lakefront location gives you access to the calmer waters of Monroe Harbor, with kayak tours and beginner classes that the whole family can enjoy.

Expand Beyond Urban Kayaking in Chicago

Urban Kayaking in Chicago might be the go-to adventure for paddlers living in the city, but getting outside of the urban limits gives you access to expansive wildlife and more peaceful waters. Take your boat out to Busse Woods to experience a 457-acre lake that offers the perfect atmosphere for family time or learning how to get comfortable in your boat. While there, look out for largemouth bass, Northern pike, and walleye—all popular fish catches in Busse Woods.
