In order to make a house a home, you have to add your own personal flare and make it comfortable to relax in, and nothing adds warmth more than a perfectly lit, scented candle. If you have them lit all the time, you may be surprised to hear how easy they are to make! All that’s required is a container, wax (or soy wax), and wick.
According to The Spruce Crafts, all you will need are:
Equipment / Tools
- Pot
- Hot plate or electric stove
Materials
- Wax
- Wick
- Container
- Fragrance (optional)
- Color (optional)
- Skewers or Popsicle sticks
The first thing you will want to do is clear a space to get crafty in your home. We suggest placing towels or newspapers down. Next, put your candle container on a sturdy tabletop, and place your wick in the middle of your container and have it stand up until it hangs on the outside of the container. We suggest having it wrapped around a popsicle stick, but not having the popsicle stick lay on top of the container yet.
Next, heat your wax! This is also the time that you will want to add some essential oils for fragrance, or dye so it’s colored. Finally, pour your melted wax into your candle container, and now place your popsicle stick on top of the container so the wick sets straight up. Once the wax is cooled, you can cut the wick accordingly and light your new DIY candle!
Are Essential Oils Toxic to Pets?
YES, well, some are. Although fragrance is one of the best things that comes with candles, be cautious of what essential oils can be toxic to pets! For instance, these essential oils are toxic to cats: Cinnamon oil, Citrus oil, Clove oil, Eucalyptus oil, Oil of Sweet Birch, Pennyroyal oil, Peppermint oil, Pine oils, Tea Tree oil, Wintergreen, and Ylang Ylang. Dogs are also at risk with essential oils, so try to keep these ones out of the house: Pennyroyal oil, Pine oil, Tea tree oil, Wintergreen oil, Cinnamon oil, Citrus oil, Peppermint oil, Sweet Birch oil, and Ylang Ylang. Now that you are an expert at candle making, there are so many ways to share your creation with the world. From gifting your candles to loved ones, starting your own Etsy shop, or just decking your home out with amazingly scented candles, we hope this project brings you joy!
