The holiday season is almost over but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still participate in holiday activities. One of our favorite ways to get in the spirit is by going to Christmas plays. From timeless theater acts to modern immersive experiences, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Here are our top 3 picks for the best Chicago Christmas plays to watch this holiday season.

A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a grumpy old man who is visited by the 3 Christmas ghosts. His encounter with the ghosts causes him to change his spirit to a gentler one. The story was adapted to a play from Charles Dickens's classic novel “A Christmas Carol”. Today, the play is recognized across the globe and attracts many during the holiday season. The Nutcracker

Another traditional Christmas play, The Nutcracker! Performed by Joffrey Ballet dance company, The Nutcracker was adapted into ballet from the 1816’s German writer Ernst Theodore Amadeus Hoffman. The story is about a girl who befriends a Nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve and battles a Mouse King. You can watch how the story plays out at the Civic Opera House until December 26th. How The Grinch Stole Christmas

Watch Dr. Seuss’s holiday and childhood favorite story, How The Grinch Stole Christmas! In this tale, an odd-looking green fellow decides to ruin Christmas for a nearby village called Whoville. In doing so, he meets a girl from the village which helps him warm his heart for the holidays. You can attend this play at James M, Nederlander Theatre all the way through January 2nd.
