Celebrate Juneteenth in Chicago

|

Are you trying to understand what Juneteenth is all about? Or how you can celebrate it?

Juneteenth is a holiday that honors the end of slavery in the United States and this holiday first began after the Civil War. Just last year, President Biden signed a bill that officially made Juneteenth a recognizable holiday by the federal government which went into effect immediately. It has been 157 years since enslaved African Americans were freed in the United States thanks to Juneteenth. To this day, it is considered the longest-running African American celebrated holiday, and if you’re wondering how you can celebrate the end of slavery in Chicago, you should check out these events listed below.

This Sunday, The DuSable Museum of African American History is hosting a Juneteenth BBQ. At this event, you can treat yourself to some food, live performances, horseback riding, and even bring your kids to join in on the fun! This free event starts at 11 AM and ends at 8 AM, and it is BYOG (bring your own grill) 🍢. If you’re in the mood for more of a festival vibe, head to Zhou B Art Center this Sunday. This New Orleans inspired experience is focused on celebrating Black voices, Black art, and Black excellence. The Congo Square Theatre’s 2022 Festival is free to attend and its vision is to dedicate its space as a haven for artists of color and to create transformative Black theatre. Come and enjoy live music, theatrical readings, guest performances, and much more!

Another way to honor the black community in Chicago is by supporting local black-owned businesses! Some that you can always check out are 360 Mind Body Soul, a fitness center, Justice of the Pies, a homemade pie and quiche shop that ships worldwide, and Plant Salon, a plant shop that specializes in beautifying people and plants.

If you are able to celebrate Juneteenth, make sure to tag our community at Aqua Lakeshore East to let us in on the fun for a chance to be featured on our social media pages. We always love to see what our residents are up to around Windy City! 🖤
