For over 100 years, the musical and theatrical scene has been appearing on the streets of Chicago. Bringing laughter, music, tears, and joy to the people of the windy city has led to Broadway shows making it a point to have a short residency in one of the many theatres that occupy the West Loop neighborhood. But how did it all get started? Here’s a little history on how Chicago, and it's theatre district, put itself on the map in the eyes of directors and producers on Broadway.
The Auditorium Theatre
Known as the oldest operating theatre in the Theatre District, the Auditorium Theatre first opened in 1889 and was one of the first public buildings to use the newest technology at the time; electric lighting and air conditioning. With both a lower orchestra level and an upper balcony level, this theatre has been home to some incredible shows in the past such as Sister Act and Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
The CIBC Theatre
First opening in 1906 as the Majestic Theatre, this was the first venue in Chicago to cost over $1 million. Since going through countless buy out’s, name changes, and even a 15 year period of vacancy, the CIBC Theatre is currently the home to Broadway’s biggest hit of the last few years, Hamilton.
Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place
As Chicago’s newest theatre, this theatre went through an official grand opening in 2010. The Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place gives guests a more modern feel, rather than the historical look many are used to. Once homes to the musical-party hit, Rock of Ages, this theatre will surely see more hits in the near future.
